Remorse

Fiona knelt at the bottom of the stairs. Adam’s body crumpled in front of her. She jumped when Heather put a hand on her shoulder. “We have to get out of the house.”

Fiona shoved her away, jumping up. “Why? We can’t get into the car. Can’t call for help. Adam’s dead. Janey’s dead. Seth must be too.”

Heather tried again to pull her away, but Fiona pressed her back up to the wall, cradling an envelope to her chest.

Willem reached out to her. “Hey, I know. But we don’t have to be too.”

Fiona’s eyes blazed. “What is going on here? These envelopes, the secrets? It must mean something! Heather, in your stupid movies, what does it mean?”

Heather’s mouth went dry. They were movies. Fake. The only meaning was to give the audience a good time. “I don’t—”

“What if the killer wants us to come clean?” Lulu reached for the envelope Fiona held. “It’s a stupid game, but maybe if we knew all the secrets, we could… live?”

Heather shook her head. “A couple of lies about getting sick and quitting a job? That’s worth dying over?” Those were trivial things. What could someone possibly know about them that would make this worth it? No one could know something so bad. Some secrets were too much. And the ones in the envelopes—they weren’t that.

“What does Adam’s say?” Fiona’s voice had lost its edge. It sobered Heather; Fiona always had her edge.

Lulu peeled the paper and flipped it open. “His says: ‘I’m the one who keyed your ex’s car.’”

Fiona crumpled to the ground. “No wonder he helped me pay the fine.” She reached out and took his hand in hers, pressing it to her forehead. “You dumb idiot. You didn’t need to defend me.”

Lulu put the card back in its envelope. “All the secrets have to do with each other.” Her words were soft, like she wasn’t meaning to speak out loud. Then her eyes flashed. “This is about coming clean. But how does he know these things? What does he know about me?”

Heather couldn’t stop her knee from bouncing. She was starting to understand this game. “We have to go.” She put a hand on Fiona’s shoulder. “We can walk down the road, run if we have to. But we can’t stay here.”

The front door banged closed, and the house fell into darkness.

What used to be cozy rooms turned into caves shifting with shadows. Outside, clouds had moved in, blocking out the moon and leaving only a gray haze through the windows. Across the lake, a few houses had lights on, but they were nothing more than pinpricks in the distance.

A chair scraped the floor in the kitchen. “Get upstairs!” Willem’s hand locked on Heather’s, dragging her with him. When she watched movies, she always rolled her eyes at the characters running upstairs to get away from the killer, and yet here she was, with that as the only option.

Willem shoved her forward and called for Lulu and Fiona. Heather’s heart beat too loud in her ears, but someone was following her.
